The foundry of Jaigarh Fort started producing Canons at the time of Raja Bhagwant Das (1575-1589). Raja Man Singh I (1589-1614) was successor of Raja Bhagwant Das.
He entered in to a treaty with mighty Mogul Emperor, Akbar and let his sister married to him. It was against the custom of Rajputs and whole Rajput community stood against him. Mansingh also served as General of Akbar. Sawai Jai Singh II (1700-1743), grandson of Mirza Raja Jai Singh I, founded the city of Jaipur and constructed a palace for Royal family.
The city of Jaipur came as an off suit of Amber.
Sawai Jai Singh II faced varied problems. He could not rely on the Mogul blindly. Moreover, Marathas were becoming powerful and started looting various territories in western and north- western India. They have even harassed a lot the mighty Mogul emperor, Aurangzeb, a contemporary of Jai Singh.
Sawai Jai Singh was a foresighted person. He was a scholar too. He thought it difficult to handle both Mogul and Maratha at a time. Moguls were in Delhi and they could come straight to Amber without any obstruction. He shifted his capital from Amber to Jaipur and made Amber fort and hills natural obstacle to Mogul coming from Delhi.
He engaged creative brain of Vidyadhar for town planning and built Jaipur the best planned city in the world. He wanted Jaipur to be the best in various aspects such as economy, business, knowledge, scientific researches, arts and culture.
Sawai Jai Singh, who spent most of his time in the battle fields, knew the value of human resources and fetched best artists, medical professionals, astrologers, jewelers, merchant and Pandits. Some other renowned Kings are Madho Singh and Ramsingh. Maharaja Madho Singh traveled to London. He brought two huge silver vessels full of Ganges water with him. These are perhaps the biggest silver vessels in the world. He built Madho Vilas Palace. Sawai Ram Singh built Rambagh Palace and Ramniwas Bagh.
There is a famous story about Maharaja Ramsingh that depicts his love to the city. One day, he was traveling through the city. A pedestrian spitted in the street. He became annoyed. One of his ministers told him to take it easy. Maharaja replied with grief that he loved the roads like his palace and could not tolerate such nuisance even in the road.Jaipur Videos
Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II was the last ruler of Jaipur. He lived till 1970. Jaipur is indebted to him for modern educational and medical facilities. Sawai Mansingh hospital (SMS) is the biggest and the best in entire Rajasthan. He founded Maharaja and Maharani Colleges for boys and girls respectively. These two colleges are still known for their education standard. These are also the biggest colleges in Rajasthan till date. Maharani Gayatri Devi (MGD) girls school and hostel was known as the best girls boarding school in India. Maharani Gayatri Devi, who breathed her last recently, was the Queen of Maharaja Sawai Mansingh II.
Brigadier Bhawani Singh, eldest son of Maharaja Sawai Mansingh II is the head of the clan at present.
